At the jazz-folk crossroads, a meeting of minds.
Of two experienced jazz guitarists and of one accomplished folk musician. The roots
ingredient is contributed to the jam by Tuule Kann, an academically trained and
folk-tested expert on the kannel, an Estonian traditional instrument related to the
zither. Ms Kanns performance with Weekend Guitar Trio last year gave evidence of
also her ample improvisational abilities.
Ain Agan (b.1959) is a nigh universal jazz guitarist who has demonstrated his
versatility in a number of different musical contexts. After a lengthy period with the
Estonian Radio Variety Orchestra, Agan has performed with a.o. Raivo Tafenaus group
So What and the Raul Sööt-led Deeper Sound. His 1994 solo album claims close kinship
with the Frisell-Scofield lineage of modern jazz.
Jaak Sooäär (b.1972) stands out among the younger generation of Estonian jazz
guitarists as an example of steady artistic development. He is attracted to both the
malleable variety of electronic sounds and the meditative coolness associated with
Scandinavian jazz. He is not averse to a shot of hot-blooded improvisation either. At
earlier Jazzkaar festivals Sooäär has taken out his own combo, Ajastajad, and hes
played with the Scandinavian-Estonian project The Dynamite Vikings. |
