Over the years they have improvised live for theatre
productions, they have performed in spaces big and small for listeners used to the
atmosphere of contemporary music festivals as well as for customers more accustomed to the
beery-leary ambience of the bar room.

Since the memorable summer days of 1988, the
fearless fellowship of the spontaneously free and freely spontaneous Perception Unit
(Tunnetusüksus) has regularly flown a-criss-a-cross the widths and depths of the still
partly uncharted or, if you prefer, wholly un-note-dated musical
territories. Far from being a cozy and secure charter flight, this sonic adventure has
taken the Perceptionists to some pretty amazing and far-out places.
All right, as far as places go right here in Estonia this band has always belonged
in a league of their own. Which is more or less a league of one, yes. But in the past few
years the Unit guitarist Mart Soo, bassist Rivo Laasi, saxophonist Mart
Süda, trombonist Eduard Akulin, drummer Tanel Ruben has
managed to put its best foot forward also on the outernational scene. In 1998 they
appeared at two prestigious New York venues of experimental music, the Knitting Factory
and the Cooler. Over the years they have improvised live for theatre productions, they
have performed in spaces big and small for listeners used to the atmosphere of
contemporary music festivals as well as for customers more accustomed to the beery-leary
ambience of the bar room. A couple of their experiences are documented on tape and disc:
the current CD «Tabor On The Moon» (rec. 1996) and the much earlier snap-shot-long-shot
cassette «Global Mango Free» (1992). Each in its own way a milestone in their pilgrimage
and progress.
Mart Soo and Eduard Akulin have played gigs and sessions with international Improv
veterans like Kalle Laar, Samm Bennett, Takashi Kazamaki, whereas the whole Units
most prolific collaboration so far has evolved from the meeting with the New York duo Lisa
Karrer and David Simmonds.
What of Jazzkaar99? Right. Therell be a different
collaborator, of course. The Estonian singer Siiri Sisask who due to her previous
experience, as omnifarious as it is, may nevertheless appear as an unexpected choice for
the Unit. Their few joint ventures of late, though, have proven rather remarkable. Ms
Sisask affixes piano to the ensembles instrumentation, add to this her vocal arsenal
drawn from rock, pop, classical, jazz and ethno plus her theatrical stage persona
plus the Units renewed interest in Electronica and it becomes
impossible to predict what is about to happen when they take to the stage. But isnt
that the point? Exactly. |
