A
chance meeting it well may have been, but a meeting of minds it certainly was as well. Jaak
Sooäär (he of Estonia and the guitar) and Daniel Erdmann (Germany, saxophone)
came together for the first time in the line-up of the European Youth Jazz Orchestra '99.
After the orchestra rehearsals, it was soon noticed, the German-Estonian twosome took to
practising on its own, some. More and more often, and them some. What's more, at the
orchestra's live gigs the saxophone-guitar interplays tended to develop into quite lengthy
and engaging improvisations. (The latter, according to the reviewer of the Berlingske
Tidende, belonged amongst the best passages of the entire orchestra performance.) On
the Youth Orchestra rolling into Paris, Erdmann and Sooäär headed for a studio and
recorded their joint CD, «Dessert Time», without further delay. According to the sax-man
and the axe-man themselves, they'd very much prefer to christen their style «free happy
jazz» – an uninhibited dialogue full of sharp turns of the phrase and full-throttle
changes of subjects. After playing at Jazzkaar 2000, the Dessert Time duo is bound to
perform in France and Germany.
In his hometown, Berlin, Daniel Erdmann leads the quartet Erdmann 2000. On the list
of his other collaborations one finds the names of Aki Takase and Rudi Mahall.
Jaak Sooäär lives and studies in Copenhagen where he plays
with the groups Almost Zebra and The Dynamite Vikings.
