The American Critic Francis Davis wrote in Downbeat Magazine: «It’s fair to say that the Ganelin Trio is one of the premier jazz ensembles not only in Europe but in the entire world». The trio Ganelin, Tarassov and Chekasin was active all over their native Russia and played at the major jazz festivals all over the world.
The leading member of the group was Ganelin, who played at once the piano, with Victor Fonarov, cello and Mika Markovich, percussion. Mixing Genres and styles is one of the characteristics of the ensemble. «Our music is consciously polystylistic,» says Ganelin. «We are interested in resetting different stylistic means and musical elements into a new context, defining our own way of playing»
Wide range, as it is, the Trio’s music is carefully structured. Each number is composed by Ganelin and worked out by the ensemble in advance. But the final version is always created at the stage – every time with a fresh spirit.
Critics and jazz lovers are both unanimous in applauding the new trio.
