Its
the interpreting of spiritual folk hymns that these six musicians have dedicated
themselves to, fully and with due modesty.
The first public performance of the group took place in the spring of 1998, under the
moniker Kadri Hunt & Her Company. By now, known as Hüüd ja Hääl and still
comprising musicians of greatly varied backgrounds from plainchant to modern
classical, from jazz to pop theyve delivered several well-received concerts
in different parts of Estonia.
Prior to Hüüd ja Hääl, the groups accomplished vocalist Kadri Hunt was perhaps
best known for her contributions to the ensembles Linnamuusikud and Heinavanker, and her
involvement with various projects of childrens music. Her 13-year-old daughter, Mari
Poll, studies the violin. Mart Soo, an active participant in numerous
improvising outfits (Weekend Guitar Trio, Tunnetusüksus) teaches the guitar at the Georg
Ots Music School in Tallinn. Taavo Remmel is a versatile double-bassist, one of the
most sought-after instrumentalists in Estonian jazz.
In Estonia, the religious folk song emerged in the course of the 18th century.
In their original form these songs mostly represented variations on Lutheran hymns,
although occasionally texts from psalm books could be sung to other olden tunes as well,
including those of runic songs. Outfitting the old hymns in varied and often modern
sounds, Hüüd ja Hääl subtly shows that the music of yore can carry substantial
relevance to the present day and age.
