On running the first live-test of this extraordinary instrumental configuration at last year’s festival – guitars & kantele still is one of the rarest combination in jazz, isn’t it? – the participants came away convinced that their project was well worth continuing. As well as being explored further. And that’s what they’ve done too. Besides each member’s other musical engagements, of course.
Of the kantele-players, Pille Karras and Tuule Kann, the latter’s academic training and experience in folk-lore have served her well not only in her performances of contemporary music and traditional pieces but also in her encounters with improvisers (e.g. Weekend Guitar Trio). Guitarist Ain Agan (b. 1959), a follower of the Frisell-Scofield’s lineage of modern jazz, has regularly worked with saxophonist Raul Sööt’s group Deeper Sound and the Raivo Tafenau-directed So What.
With their multiple talents imaginatively combined, harmonious 4D stringscapes are bound to arise.
