Let
us here make use of the word «eclecticism», and let us give it a good name. Because
eclecticism - «freely choosing and using various sources» does come very
naturally to Rinneradio. Saxophones and samplers, the breakin' beats of HipHop and the
swingin' surges of jazz, Ambient atmospherics and the steely pulse of Techno, the
traditional vocal art of the Sami people and the universal dialect of drum'n'bass, the
bluesy moan and the funky strut - anything could be picked and found fit for Rinneradio's
A-list. At previous Jazzkaar events in Estonia, they have repeatedly proved this. Of same,
they've made aware club-hunters and dance-trancers in Scandinavia and Japan, France and
America.
Rinneradio was set up in the late 1980s by Tapani Rinne, a young saxophonist then freshly
out of the touring avant-school of the late Edward Vesala's band. The angular
funk-abstractions of Rinneradio's earliest «broadcasts» quite soon gave way to ever more
electrified and diversified mutant-styles. «Unik» became their breakthrough album in
Finland in 1994; in 1995 Rinneradio were declared the Jazz Band of the Year in their
homeland. Jazz, however, was already but a particle of their overall mix. The band's
collaborations with DJs and all kinds of electronic mavericks grew more and more frequent.
(e.g. Rinneradio were remixed on record by Finland's own Mika Vainio, of Pan Sonic's
notoriety, they also got the live on-line-mix from DJ Spooky) The band's popularity has
steadily increased at home and abroad. Last year Tapani Rinne's solo record «Insider»
was released, and Rinneradio created «an alternative soundtrack» for Luc Bresson's movie
of 1990, «Atlantis».
At Jazzkaar 2000, part of Rinneradio's personnel will also back up the live performance by
Wimme (see separate entry)
