Well-grounded
in jazz-based improvisation as well as contemporary composition, capable of electronic
experiments as well as acoustic intimacy, trumpeter and flugelhorn player Markus
Stockhausen has successfully performed a good number of leaders and sidemans
roles since the late 1970s.
«Markus is a stylist, with a preference for clarity of tone and refined, often simple
melodies; a unique trumpeter in an era of technically proficient but often creatively
lacking soundalikes» (Eric Boehm; The Wire, September 1994). Professing admiration for
the likes of Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard, Markus Stockhausen readily admits that the
greatest influence on his creativity has been his father Karlheinz Stockhausen, one
of the most significant composers of the 20th century and also the father of
contemporary electronic music, no less. By his late teens, Markus had become actively
involved in Stockhausen Seniors productions. Apart from those, the young man started
to work with the jazz band Key and then, together with his brother Simon, led the groups
Kairos and Aparis. Subsequently he released albums as a leader and collaborated with Gary
Peacock, Jasper Vant Hof, Charlie Mariano, Arild Andersen et al.
Markus studied trumpet formally at the Cologne Conservatory; he furthered his knowledge at
the Berlin Philharmonic and with Manfred Schoof. From 1987 on, he has regularly conducted
his own summer-courses for young trumpeters. The 1990s saw and heard Markus Stockhausen,
again jointly with Simon, compose music for several monumental multi-media extravaganzas.
The 1991 «Köln Musik Fantasy» and the 1996 «Jubilee», each performed by an
impressively varied cast und mit Licht, Laser und Feuerwerk ,
were witnessed by 70 000 and 100 000 viewers-listeners, respectively.
At Jazzkaar 2000, Markus Stockhausen will elegantly sound his solo horn under the
resounding vaults of Kaarli Church.
