«
Oddly enough, the music that VSP Projekt makes combines in a way the emotional openness inherent in rock music with a sense of distance and even alienation. It seems as both the object observed by a lonely spectator (a metropolis empty of people, an endless field of snow in the brightly glowing sun, or anything else) as well as the relation of the spectator to the observed object, peculiar to him, a unique relation, are being registered.»
(Erkki-Sven Tüür, in 1989, album booklet notes)

VSP stands for Vaigla, Sibul and Põder, the respective bass-guitar-keyboards carrying members of this fusion-fuelled project of 1986’s vintage. Guided in their sound-search by the electric lights of Northern cool and calm, VSP Projekt produced their only LP in 1989 (re-released on CD in ‘96, by which time the band had come to a halt). Jazzkaar’01 witnesses their comeback, albeit with a somewhat altered musical agenda. For meanwhile, as they know full well, the times, they’ve been a-changin’.

facts & non-fiction

At the time of forming VSP Projekt, its three members played in another band that was to become Ultima Thule, one of Estonia’s rock legends.

On top of VSP Projekt and Ultima Thule, Riho Sibul’s (b.1958) credits include Magnetic Band, Kaseke, In Spe, Kappel-Vaigla-Sibul, Music Seif, Lainer, Radar, Jäääär, and Pajuke.

The most recent line-up Sibul has publicly performed with is Kooos, his joint venture with Tõnis Mägi and Robert Jürjendal.

He has made guest appearances with the guitar-kannel quartet of Agan, Sooäär, Kann, Karras.

Riho Sibul has performed improvisations with composer Erkki-Sven Tüür.

Bassist Raul Vaigla has played most of the hybrid rock-jazz styles known to man, possibly. To list everybody he has performed and recorded with is nigh impossibly, though.

On quitting Ultima Thule in the late 1980s, keyboard player Aare Põder left Estonia and made his home in Sweden. Now and again he plays concerts in the land of his birth.
