Trinidadian born trumpet player Nick Ali’s skills in salsa and funk/acid-jazz are impressive and his energy is captivating.

Nick Ali, aka «The Brownman» push forward the frontiers of Cuban and Brazilian music through Brownman’s original compositions charged with Latin rhythm, jazz harmony and very funky groove. His sound is Freddie Hubbard meets Clifford Brown & Lee Morgan with hints of Woody Shaw Toronto trumpet player represents the next generation of jazz musicians who show the kind of intense improvisation-interaction and raw energy that deliver irresistible, explosive music!
He started listening to music with a more critical ear in the late 70’s, his earliest influences as a kid were mainly jazz artists of the ‘60s, particularly those on the Blue Note and Columbia labels… like Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderly, John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Bill Evans, Tom Harrell, Art Farmer, Dizzy Gillespie. Plus horn driven R&B bands like Blood, Sweat & Tears, Earth, Wind & Fire and Tower Of Power.
The two trumpet players who really changed the way Nick Ali played were Randy Brecker and Freddie Hubbard. At 18 Ali discovered the great Cuban trumpet tradition, which changed his life. El Greco, Chapotín, Arturo Sandoval, Juan Mungvia, Jorge Varona, Basilio Marcus.
Brownman has performed (or recorded) with the likes of Kenny Wheeler, Hugh Fraser, Don Thompson, Kirk Macdonald, Pat Labarbera, Rita Di Ghent & The Sprawl Project, The Philosopher Kings, Grüvoria, Dr. Pop & The Noise, Juke Joint, The Pocket Dwellers, Tabarruk, Energia Latina, Bestial, Cimarron, Macondo, Pacande, Dominicanada & far too many more to list here.
2001 saw him win the coveted 2001 Montreal Jazz Festival’s «Prix De Jazz» Award and the CBC Galaxie’s 2001 «Rising Star» Award. He is one of the first calls for not only jazz and urban recordings, but also appears in the horn sections of countless latin groups. Ali’s recording credits sit at just under 100 CDs and he is currently composing and arranging actively for 4 groups of his own.
«There’s no big mystery about the great musicians in history,» says Ali, «all of them practiced fiercely and all would surely say that’s the key to unlocking your own musical ability… time in the practice room and time with the record player studying where you’ve been in order to know where you’re going.»
