American jazz trio The Bad Plus sound aesthetics are similar to pop and rock music. Even though they are a classical piano-bass-drums trio, their music full of sweeping energy is easy to grasp also for a younger generation. The 17-year old ensemble is facing a new and exciting chapter, as the pianist seat will be taken by a new man Orrin Evans. Jazzkaar audience will be one of the first ones to hear the trio’s new line-up.
Minneapolis-bred, but based in New York, trio The Bad Plus was founded by pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson and drummer Dave King. Their debut album released in 2001, and by now more than a dozen albums have been recorded together.
The Bad Plus music features elements from avant-garde jazz, coloured by strong influences from rock and pop. The trio first earned their reputation with their imaginative and ingenious covers of pop music gems. Unexpected approach was given to Nirvana, Aphex Twin, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, David Bowie, Black Sabbath and Radiohead songs. Their music puts a strong emphasis on dynamics, improvisatory freedom and humour, which are a rare phenomenon in modern jazz.
After focusing some years on recording their own music, the album “It’s Hard” (2016) yet again featured cover versions of known songs. All the instruments in the trio have an equal importance, with what they draw away from classical ‘piano + background instruments’ format. The Bad Plus has shown that jazz does not belong to museums and is very capable of entertaining also the fans of today’s rock, pop and electronical music.
Bassist Reid Anderson is a recognized composer, whose electronical compositions are extremely gripping. As a musician, his main objective is to communicate with the listener in an understandable language through melody, rhythm and sounds. He has collaborated with reputable musicians like Mark Turner, Ben Monder, Jamie Cullum and others. Drummer Dave King has written music for films and for the fashion designer Isaac Mizrah collection. He has shared the stage also with Bill Frisell, Joshua Redman, Jexx Beck, Django Bates and many others.
Recently a duel-concert “Thelonious Monk 100” took place, where the trio’s new pianist Orrin Evans and ex-pianist Ethan Iverson both left as winners. On numerous albums and concerts, Evans has collaborated together with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Kevin Eubanks, Mark Whitfield, Christian McBride and Reid Anderson from The Bad Plus, thus the choice of a new pianist was not by accident. Orrin Evans promises to bring to the ensemble these emotions that right now are missed. The Bad Plus took the Jazzkaar stage in 2006 and now, 11 year later we have the amazing opportunity to discover the new face of the famous power trio.
