Pat Metheny Unity Group with Chris Potter, Antonio Sanchez, Ben Williams and Guilio Carmassi end the 25th edition of Tallinn International Festival Jazzkaar. Guitarist Pat Metheny, one of the most famous and successful musicians of today’s jazz has won 20 Grammy Awards in eleven different categories. Behind him are more than for decades of career as a musician, but unlike many artists of his generation he doesn’t look back – he keeps pushing forward.

The Artistic Director of Festival Jazzkaar, Anne Erm says that Pat Metheny is one of her dream-artists: „I have tried to get him to perform in Estonia for the last 20 years, but only now, for Jazzkaar’s 25th jubilee we got the okay from his management.“ Music critic Immo Mihkelson notes that jazz has been for Metheny the music of changes and as a seeker the musician has stayed in constant transformation. He is an open-minded artist, whose activities have greatly influenced the development of jazz – he is seen as a role-model for many generations of musicians, also Estonian ones. “There aren’t many musicians who have changed the world with their distinctly recognizable talent. Pat Metheny is definitely one of them,“ says the organizer of Viljandi Guitar Festival, Ain Agan.

Metheny’s breakthrough to the international arena happened in 1975 with his debut album „Bright Size Life“. During the years he has won countless titles of „Best Jazz Guitarist“ at the polls of both critics and readers of the most renowned jazz magazines like DownBeat, JazzTimes and the portal All About Jazz; many of his albums have gained the status of Gold Record.

Pat Metheny Unity Group celebrates returning to mainstream jazz and the core values of this genre. For almost 30 years the guitar of Pat Metheny hasn’t been accompanied by tenor saxophone, the answer to the question „Why now?“ can be answered cith the name „Chris Potter“. Metheny says that he is Potter’s huge admirer; he is captivated by his bold playing, sound and fantastic improvisations. Drummer Antonio Sanchez has played with Pat Methenyfor the last decade. Bassist Ben Williams, who by the way studies under Christian McBride, is an excellent musician and a great stage partner. At the Unity Group’s new album one can also hear the multi-instrumentalist and composer Giulio Carmassi. The new album of this line-up will come on sale in February 2014.

On this Europe-tour Pat Metheny Unity Group gives 33 concerts. In Tallinn the band performs on April 27th at 7 pm at the Nokia Concert Hall.
