The problem with the female jazz musician in the States is that they’re not really marketed in a way so you’d know about them, and if they are, it’s in a way that appeals to men. I like to celebrate being a woman, but you’re not gonna see me on the back of my album half-naked or something. People still assume I’m a singer, and that would just make it worse. It still happens at soundchecks – I’ll get asked if I’m a singer, and that really pisses me off. It’s like: ‘No, motherfucker, I am a saxophonist! Just wait and listen!’
