Jazzkaar 2018 main program consists of 60 concerts. The 29th festival surprises us with Cory Henry, a three-time Grammy winner with his ensemble The Funk Apostles. Tickets for the concerts released now are 40% off on February 1st and 2nd.

Jazzkaar 2018 is headlined by British singer Laura Mvula and the leading jazz musicians in USA – hammond organ virtuoso and singer Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles, saxophone legend Bill Evans and the quartet Petite Blond II, reputable jazz trio The Bad Plus and America’s best trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire.

On April 20th, in honour of the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, Jazzkaar celebrates the opening of the festival with an extraordinary performance “Story of a Hundred” in Port Noblessner. The original music is composed by Erki Pärnoja, staged by Jaak Prints and photographed by Kaupo Kikkas. “Story of a Hundred” will be brought out with the help of Viru Keskus.

“Jazzkaar is always new and extraordinary. We are proud that during the 29th festival we, together with the authors, musicians, a hundred lovely Estonians and the sponsors of the project, can give this present to the Republic of Estonia. During the festival we will also be showcasing the accomplishments of Estonian jazz musicians. The inspiring Estonian jazz will be heard by more foreign journalists and delegates than usual,“ said Anne Erm, the artistic director of the festival.

The diversity of the European jazz will be represented by Dominic Miller, guitarist known as the sideman for Sting, Nik Bärtsch with his hypnotic sounds from Switzerland, impeccable Spanish singer Silvia Perez Cruz, electronical Danish duo Bremer/McCoy, French ethnojazz trio Delbecq 3, Norwegian talented singing bassist Ellen Andrea Wang and many more.

ECM artist Kristjan Randalu with Ben Monder and Markku Ounaskari, and jazz ensamble Voorand-Koikson-Sooäär-Daniel will be presenting their albums during the festival. The quartet, together with the Grammy-winning Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, will make a tribute to the music of Veljo Tormis.

Estonia’s new music will be brought to the festival by Estonian Voices, Heikko Remmel Quartet and Anna Põldvee Quartet. Estonian musicians will give two exciting showcase-concerts. The first concert focuses on our talented female musicians Kirke Karja, Mingo Rajandi and Maarja Aarma with bands. In the second concert the audience can hear cross-border music composed by Argo Vals, Modulshtein ja Mauno Meesit.

Young jazz enthusiasts are entertained by Eeva and Villu Talsi, school children are welcomed by #youngjazz peers from Estonia, Denmark and Portugal with a special project.

Jazzkaar club music is very abundant – the program features next to USA jazz-star Cory Henry Britain’s club favourites Romare, Myles Sanko, Werkha and Sons of Klemet. During the evening Estonians Sander Mölder, Laura & W, Ashilevi and Trump Conception will be taking the stage.

Next to the main program the popular home concerts series will continue. Jazzkaar will start looking for exciting homes which would like to host musicians and open their doors to the public in February.
