The music, however, doesn\u2019t lodge inside the tight confines of the jazz idiom, which is not surprising considering the alto saxophonist and composer acknowledges the likes of Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye as significant touchstones. Similar to how Miles Davis\u2019 seminal LP,\u00a0<em>On the Corner,\u00a0<\/em>subverted its main guiding lights \u2013 James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone \u2013 then crafted its own unique, polyrhythmic, groove-laden, improv-heavy universe,\u00a0<strong><em>Sounds From The Ancestors\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>occupies its own space with intellectual clarity, sonic ingenuity and emotional heft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concept initially was about trying to get some of the musical sounds that I remembered as a kid growing up \u2013 sounds that lift your spirit from people like John Coltrane, \u2018A Love Supreme\u2019; Aretha Franklin, \u2018Amazing Grace\u2019; Marvin Gaye, \u2018What\u2019s Going On\u2019; and the spiritual side of the church,\u201d Garrett explains. \u201cWhen I started to think about them, I realized it was the spirit from my ancestors.\u201d Indeed,\u00a0<strong><em>Sounds From The Ancestors\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>reflects the rich jazz, R&amp;B, and gospel history of his hometown of Detroit.
