“Versatility” is the word to use when talking about Cätlin Mägi’s loop “orchestra” of Jew’s harps, electronics and heartfelt vocal, where the tiny ancient instrument is combined with various effect blocks and a looper. To further personalise and enhance the harmonies, Mägi is using her array of Jew’s harps both as rhythmic and melodic instruments, often in parallel. What results is powerful electronically processed traditional music with an unexpected sound of a synthesizer. However, the dominant use of electronics is balanced by high-pitched whistles and deep bass notes here and there, combined with Mägi’s unique singing voice to offer a deeply touching, harmonious and holistic musical experience.

Cätlin Mägi is one of the most outstanding role models in the Estonian folk music scene. She is a master in the tradition of Estonian bagpipes and Jew’s harp, a professional and brilliant musician, a charismatic teacher and an opinion leader. She is currently active in the bands RO:TORO, Aparaat (Tiit Kikas and Cätlin Mägi), Torupilli Jussi Trio, Ju-Ju (Cätlin Mägi on traditional instruments + DJ). As a musician, Mägi has participated in the production of more than twenty CDs and released several albums both as a solo artist and band member. In recent years, her solo and group performances have often taken her abroad to introduce Estonian folk music and traditional instruments internationally.
