05/05/2024 Traditional but diverse – Christian McBride

Reviews Olga Klebanovskaja

What a wonderful feeling to welcome back some old friends of Jazzkaar! Twelve years ago, we had the pleasure of witnessing Christian McBride, an eight-time GRAMMY® Award-winning bassist, grace the stage at Jazzkaar alongside the legendary Chick Corea. This time, he returns with his new quintet, consisting of four rising master instrumentalists, to treat us to timeless classics as well as pieces of his own and those of his band members.

The last day of Jazzkaar featured an impressive lineup of performers, including one of the festival’s headliners, bassist Christian McBride. A highly respected figure in the industry, his contributions to the jazz community and his efforts in promoting the genre are invaluable.

McBride’s extensive portfolio and list of collaborations speak volumes! Absolutely, McBride’s versatility and openness to exploring different genres are evident in his collaborations with a wide array of artists such as Herbie Hancock, Natalie Cole, Sting, Paul McCartney, Celine Dion, Queen Latifah, and even his recent orchestral concert with Billie Eilish. With over 300 recordings showcasing his virtuoso bass playing, McBride’s talent extends beyond the double bass; he is equally proficient on the bass guitar.

Christian McBride’s dedication to music extends beyond the stage. When not touring, he serves as the artistic director of the Newport Jazz and James Moody Jazz festivals. Additionally, he is actively involved in youth advocacy, serving as the artistic director of Jazz House KiDS and the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Summer Sessions. McBride also hosts radio programs such as ‘Jazz Night in America’ and ‘The Lowdown: Conversations With Christian’.

On his current tour, McBride is supported by four talented rising stars: Michael King on keyboards, Ely Perlman on guitar, Nicole Glover on saxophone, and Savannah Harris on drums. The Tallinn audience had the opportunity to see Harris perform in November last year, alongside Cécile McLorin Salvant.

Without a doubt, Christian McBride’s concert setlist would reflect the diversity of his musical influences. The band kicked off with some classics, including Chick Corea’s ‘La Fiesta’ (1972) – a special treat for those who attended Corea’s and McBride’s concert at Jazzkaar in 2012. Another highlight was a composition by Donald Byrd, ‘Theme for Malcolm’ (1990).

Known for his support of the younger generation of musicians, McBride ensured that each team member had the opportunity to showcase their own piece. Ely Perlman, a native of Tel Aviv and a third-year student at Berklee College of Music, presented his composition ‘Elevation’. The guitarist has already made a name for himself in the industry, with notable collaborations including working with Ben Wendel. Jazzkaar fans may recall his closing concert at the festival last year. New York City-based drummer Savannah Harris presented her composition ‘More Is’, while Michael King and Nicole Glover also seized their moment to shine with their compositions, supported by the rest of the band members.

The beauty of a jazz-loving audience lies in their equal appreciation for both timeless classics and completely new pieces, as was evident at JAIK. Throughout the concert, you could see the audience nodding their heads and tapping their feet to the beat of the music. Of course, Christian McBride’s new band didn’t forget to showcase his own compositions, including ‘A Morning Story’ (1996) and a newer piece titled ‘Brouhaha’ – a lively, playful composition where Mr. McBride truly shined playing his bass guitar. It was a perfect ending to a beautiful performance.

After the concert, Mr. McBride took some time to meet with the audience. While signing vinyl records, he engaged in quick chats with fans, expressing gratitude to everyone for their support. Everyone had the chance to get autographs and take photos together.

Without a doubt, everyone who attended Christian McBride’s new quintet performance left the concert deeply moved. Whether it was through deep and calm melodies or fast and lively tunes, the setlist was crafted to please all tastes. Each person may have taken away something different, but undoubtedly, the music resonated with everyone in some way.
